Garden
Students at WGE have many opportunities to learn in the garden throughout the year. Students can participate in Settle Science workshops (5 times per year), extra garden workshops with their teacher (once per month), garden club (4th & 5th graders), and open garden on Fridays after school with a caretaker. Additionally, teachers often spend time in the garden during their lunchtime to reset for the rest of the day. The garden is fully funded by the PTA and maintained by volunteers.
Garden activities are grade specific and taught through Settle Science lessons or self guided lessons by the teachers.
TKs focus on learning garden concepts with their senses, while kinders learn about what plants need to grow, referencing the book The Sunflower House, by Eve Bunting. The older grades dive deeper into the importance of nutrients in the soil and even do experiments with worms.
Students can bring their caretakers to the garden after school on Fridays to complete activities, show them something they learned or simply to enjoy the outdoor space!
The Garden Team is vital to maintaining and caring for the garden and outdoor classroom. The Garden Team is a group of volunteers ranging from those who have a passion for plants, to those who just love being outside. The Garden Team is a great opportunity to volunteer on a casual basis with flexibility, and is so impactful to the whole school community.
