Project Cornerstone is a program of the YMCA run by Willow Glen Elementary PTA volunteers. This program is committed to helping all children in Silicon Valley feel valued, respected and known. It helps individuals and communities build a web of support around young people so that they grow into healthy, caring and responsible adults.
Project Cornerstone consists of two programs run by the PTA:
Asset Building Champions (ABC): Project Cornerstone trains and coaches adult volunteers to read children’s books and lead classroom activities on a monthly basis to promote positive peer interactions and prevent bullying. One of the major goals of the ABC program is to build developmental assets and create a common language within the school community around the issue of peer abuse. The ABC program was started by a parent at Willow Glen Elementary School, Felecia Mulvany!
Los Dichos de la Casa: Project Cornerstone trains and coaches Spanish-speaking parents to read bilingual children’s books in elementary school classrooms to both build assets with the students and to engage the parents as active members of the school community. “Dichos” are values-based proverbs that are central themes in many of the books and related lessons/activities. Adult volunteers read in Spanish with the classroom teachers or students reading the English translations.
