Willow Glen Elementary parent Bob Shelby started a lunchtime recycling program at WGE in April 2008, that includes children grades 1 through 5 who eat lunch in the cafeteria. There, garbage cans are set up to collect uneaten food, and non recyclable garbage that goes to landfill (as normal). In addition, one or two children are selected each week (depending on grade level) to collect all of the cardboard lunch trays for recycling. They are put into clear plastic garbage bags, and placed in the recycle dumpsters behind the office. The goal is to collect every tray every day.
Paper recycling is done in each classroom, and recyclable paper is collected in a bin by the door, and picked up each week by a fifth grader or two, and carried to the recycle dumpster.
There is aluminum can and plastic bottle recycling in the teacher's work room, and teacher lounge. Collection is provided as needed, and taken to a recycle center, and the money earned is used to support the WGE band ($34.00 so far this year).
The school campus has been divided up into a grid, with each grade level responsible for picking up garbage in its section of the grid. Mr. Rosell decides which grades focus on their grids, and on which days.
