Children at WGE are taught appreciation for all types of music from classical and world music to rock ‘n roll. They also learn rhythm and movement, theory, music history, singing, recorder and more. Our charismatic teachers, Harry and Chris Reed are beloved by the student body and are fine musicians in their own rights. Harry Reed’s music curriculum, adopted by the San Jose Unified school district, is designed to have children reading basic music by the time they leave 5th grade.
Grades 2-5 meet for 30 minutes every other week in the music room, and Kindergarteners and 1st graders have music every week. WGE students have the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular music activities, too; Harry Reed teaches WGE 3rd – 5th graders Band, and Chris Reed and WGE 5th grade teacher, Kate Tapia, teach Opera A la Carte and Musical Theater! The music educator's salary and supplies are paid for by the PTA.
Harry Reed has a lifetime credential and is currently the band instructor at the performing arts school, Trace Elementary in the San Jose Unified school district. He has also been a professional musician for over 40 years and has run his own private music studio for 26 years.
Chris Reed has been the band director at many elementary schools in the south bay including two of the top 5 elementary schools in California. Just to name a few, Chris has taught at Ponderosa, Selma Olinder, Garden Gate and is proud to also be at Willow Glen this year! He has produced, written & recorded 3 studio albums & continues to play professionally all across the west coast. Chris’s music has even been featured on MTV’s website!
