Band is funded by the PTA and is FREE to students!
Our Band department is in its second year. Our conductor, Harry Reed, an experienced musician and seasoned SJUSD band instructor, is now teaching grade 3-5 WGE students the following instruments: flute, clarinet, saxophone, percussion, trombone and trumpet. The new WGE band debuted December 2010 in a holiday concert to a standing room-only crowd. Mr. Reed says that he's never taken a new band so far so quickly! An advanced band was added fall 2011.
Band schedule:
Mondays 7:40AM: all flutes and clarinets
Tuesdays 7:40AM: all saxophones, drums and brass (trumpets, horns, trombones, baritones)
Wednesdays 7:40AM: all beginning band members only (any instrument)
Thursdays 7:40AM: all advanced (2nd-3rd year) band members only (any instrument)
All practices will take place in either the music room (just opposite the school office) or in the cafeteria.
Students will need:
- an instrument (flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone or drum sticks with practice pad)
- 1 small box of #2 reeds and cork grease (if clarinet or saxophone)
- 1 cleaning kiit
- the book Essential Elements 2000 for their particular instrument
If your child hasn’t chosen an instrument yet, please have them come to the first two mornings of practice to learn more about each instrument. Otherwise, rental instruments are available at Music Village (2971 Union Ave at Foxworthy Ave, San Jose-408 377-2504, http://www.musvil.com/). Please DO NOT BUY an instrument if your child hasn’t begun playing yet.
WGE has a small library of instruments, books and supplies available to those for whom rentals and supply purchases are a financial hardship. WGE school rental fee is $5.00 per month. Please contact Erika at 415-517-2500 or band@wgepta.org with school rental inquiries or any other band questions.
All band members should bring their completed, signed band sign-up sheet with them to the first meeting. This form should be in your Tiger folder today, but can also be down-loaded below.
